The VALUE function enables us to convert text-based data into numeric values. Here is an explanation of how it operates: =VALUE(TEXT)

  • TEXT – This is the data that is stored as text and we’d like to convert to a value.

Understanding whether a cell contains text or a numeric value is crucial because Excel treats these data types differently. Even if the visual representation appears identical, the underlying data type determines how Excel processes and handles the information. Failing to have consistent data types can lead to difficulties when performing operations like IF statements, VLOOKUP, and various other functions. Therefore, it is essential to ensure data uniformity for smooth and accurate calculations and analyses in Excel.
